Microsoft is turning to the dark side, or at least its Windows File Explorer is. The company has announced that the next major update for Windows 10 will feature a Dark Theme for the File Explorer. The update is currently available to Windows Insiders with the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17733. Microsoft recently introduced a new Dark Mode for Outlook.com.
The news of Windows File Explorer getting a dark mode comes hot on the heels of Apple’s announcement that the next major update to macOS is going to feature a Dark Mode. The update will be a part of macOS Mojave, which will be rolled out by the end of the year. Recently, Google’s Android P also added a Dark Mode toggle to the OS. Of course, Apple and Microsoft aren’t the first to offer a dark theme. Earlier this year, YouTube started rolling out a dark theme for its app on Android.
As the name would suggest, the theme changed the app’s background, settings, search pages, and more to black. However, ‘Channels’ retained their respective colour-laden app bars. Other apps, like Twitter, have been offering a dark mode for quite a while now. Besides aesthetics, dark mode aims to reduce eye fatigue that one might get from looking at a brightly lit monitor for extended periods. Coming back to the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17733.
The update also brings with it a a number of fixes for the builds. This includes problems such as the touch keyboard becoming invisible, progress bars flashing when the progress bar updates and more. There are also a number of fixes for the built in Narrator feature. As with all preview builds, there are also some known issues which users users have to deal with till a fix is pushed out. This includes problems when launching one app from another app, a Green Screen of Death (GSoD) when deleting a local folder synced to OneDrive and more.
