Samsung Exynos 980 with integrated 5G modem, 108MP camera support and more announced

Samsung has announced its latest mobile processor, the Exynos 980. It is the company’s first processor with built-in 5G modem. The mobile processor is based on 8nm FinFET process technology. Previously, Samsung was using 7nm EUV lithography processing technology in the Exynos 9825 chipset, which powers the Galaxy Note10 series. Samsung Exynos 980 increases space efficiency and reduces power consumption on the device.

The Exynos 980 is packed with two Cortex-A77 CPU cores and six Cortex-A55 cores, paired with Mali-G76 GPU. It has a neural processing unit (NPU) that features elevated performances of up to 2.7 times compared to its predecessor. The built-in NPU helps AI takes to be processed right from the device rather than off-loaded to a server, thereby providing better data privacy and security. The NPU also enhances applications that have secure user authentication, content filtering, mixed reality, intelligent camera, and more.

Samsung claims that the Exynos 980 provides a fast gigabit downlink speed in 4G LTE and up to 2.55-gigabits per second (Gbps) in sub-6-gigahertz (GHz) 5G. The modem also supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC), which combines 2CC LTE and 5G connectivity to maximize mobile downlink speed of up to 3.55Gbps.

Moreover, the Samsung Exynos 980 supports a new Wi-Fi 6 standard, IEEE 802.11ax, that provides faster speed and greater stability for seamless online gaming and smooth high-resolution video streaming over Wi-Fi networks. The company says it can run multiple apps, intricate UX designs and high-resolution graphic games effortlessly.

Coming to the camera performance, the Samsung Exynos 980 supports up to 108-megapixels. The image signal processor supports up to five individual sensors. The presence of NPU enables the AI-powered camera to detect and understand scenes or objects, according to which the camera will then make optimal adjustments to its settings.

As for the multimedia experience, the Exynos 980 supports encoding and decoding of 4K UHD video at 120 frames per second (fps). Samsung is expected to begin mass production of the new processor by the end of this year.
