Apple iPhone SE successor to be launched in early 2020 to combat sales drop: Report

The Apple iPhone SE may have been taken off Indian shelves for good but its successor is set to make an entry in early 2020, reads a recent report by Nikkei Asian Review. The Cupertino-based company’s new low-cost iPhone model is expected to combat the ongoing sales decline Apple is seeing in its current iPhone range. As we reported back in May, Apple recently lost its top position in the global market share to Huawei.

The current iPhone range’s slump in sales can be seen in Apple’s production strategy for this year. According to the report, Apple’s initial production run for 2019 turned out 10 percent fewer units compared to the 80–85 million units Apple produced last year. Apple may increase this if there’s more demand. “The cheaper iPhone SE could serve as a sales momentum kicker the first half next year, if the new premium iPhones do not perform well in the coming months,” said Jeff Pu, an expert Tech Analyst at GF Securities, to Nikkei Asian Review.

The report goes on to say that the iPhone SE successor is expected to be of the same size as the older iPhone 8 in that it will have the same 4.7-inch display. Unlike the current line-up of iPhones, which uses an OLED panel for the display, the iPhone SE successor will come with an IPS LCD panel to save costs. Japan Display is expected to be the primary supplier of this panel, with LG Display being the secondary. Nothing else about the iPhone SE successor is known at the moment.

In related news, Apple recently confirmed the launch date of its 2019 iPhone line-up. Apple will launch the new range on September 10 at the Apple Park corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California. While the successors to the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max are expected to come in the same black, silver, and gold colours, the successor to the iPhone XR is expected to come in as many as five new colours. All three 2019 models are expected to be powered by Apple’s new A13 chipset and feature a new Taptic engine.
