PUBG Players on Xbox will soon be able to play PS4 players

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is finally moving towards cross-platform play from October. PUBG players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 can now play against each other in a match, something that was so far forbidden by the game. The test server for cross-platform play will go live late September, limited to a small set of players. The final update of the cross-platform support will roll out early October.

Microsoft announced players can now play against users on Xbox One and PS4 during its Xbox Inside stream at Gamescom happening in Germany. The feature is limited only to Xbox and PlayStation users at the moment though. PC players won’t be able to join in on the fun. Thanks to the cross-platform support, PUBG expects matchmaking times for users of both consoles to go down and to allow 100 players from both console communities to play together in the same match.

While the announcement is certainly welcome news for gamers of the console community, PUBG is still holding out on true cross-platform play by not including PCs and smartphone players into the mix. Fortnite already has merged the boundaries of platforms by allowing players across PC, consoles and mobiles to play together. Fortnite also enabled support for a keyboard and mouse on the Xbox One, but PUBG is yet to see something like for any of its versions apart from PC.

It could be PUBG’s way to avoid giving players of one platform an advantage over the other. For instance, PC players with more free-flowing input using a mouse and keyboard might find it easy hunting down console players, while console players and easily clamp down upon smartphone users.

Whatever be the case, lowering the moat for cross-platform play is a boon for the gaming industry where players are now spread across multiple platforms and with streaming coming in place thanks to the likes of Google Stadia, the boundaries will get blurred even further.

So far, we have Fortnite and Rocket League offering true cross-platform play with Destiny 2 set to get support this week. The upcoming Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare will also probably offer cross-platform support.
