Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 get an additional year of quarterly security patches

Nokia is not shy when it comes to rolling out software updates for its handsets. Most of its smartphones are Android One devices that are running on Android 9 Pie and now, the phone maker has some good news for Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 users. In a blog post, the company has announced that it is extending software support for the aforementioned handsets, which have completed the regular two-year software update cycle. However, the extended support comes in the form of an additional year of security patches for the devices. This means that the Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3 smartphones will receive quarterly security updates till the end of their third year since launch.

Security patches mean that the said phones won’t receive any major Android updates. The Nokia 3 will be the first handset in line, which will start receiving quarterly security patches from September 2019. For the Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and the Nokia 8, the patches will be rolled out from October 2019 until October 2020. It should be noted that the Nokia 6 units in the USA and India, which were sold via Amazon, won’t be receiving the extended software support. In addition, the company has reminded users that the Nokia 2 will stop receiving security patch support in November 2019.

In other Nokia news, the smartphone maker has announced that it will be participating in the upcoming IFA event. This is the first time the company will be hosting an event at IFA and as per a previous report, Nokia could announce new phones at the event. Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 might be unveiled at the event. The Nokia 7.2 was also recently spotted on Geekbench. The handset was listed with 6GB RAM, running on Android 9 Pie.
