The Windows 10 May 2019 update has been put on hold by Microsoft for Surface Book 2 laptops due to GPU issues, according to ZDNet. The report states that after the update, the discrete Nvidia GPU vanishes from the device manager on the laptop. That is causing apps and games to rely on the onboard graphics leading to GPU issues.
The problem apparently is affecting a small subset of Surface Book 2 laptops that come with a discrete Nvidia GPU. What’s ironic is that the update is causing problems in Microsoft’s own hardware. The update is now put on hold and won’t be issued till there’s a fix.
The May 2019 update has been quite problematic. Microsoft had to put the update on hold before as devices with USB storage drives or an SD card attached stopped working due to “inappropriate drive reassignment during installation”. The fix in that case was slightly easier. All you had to was pull the external storage from the device while installing the update.
Microsoft’s tryst with problematic updates continues ever since the OS launched in 2015. The company moved from making every update mandatory without the option to interfere to now giving the choice of when and what to update. The company has also stuck to a bi-annual feature update, which is when most of the new features are pushed out to Windows 10.
