Apple eyes Oscars with Six small-budget movies a year: Report

Apple wants to descend on the Academy Awards’ red carpet or so claims a new report by The New York Post. By now, we all know that Apple plans its streaming splash later in the year with the launch of its subscription-based Apple TV+ service. However, the technology giant is now said to be setting its sights on the Oscars with a slate of six small-budget, but award-worthy movies, a year. According to The Post, Apple has set aside a budget ranging between $5 million - $30 million for each feature film project.

A source told the publication that Apple’s Oscar ambitions are fueled by Netflix’s recent victory for Best Foreign Film with “Roma”. Apple is said to be hiring as well as meeting with concerned parties to take its silver screen ambitions forward and compete with the likes of Netflix and HBO.

“The source described Apple’s new film ambitions as ‘Focus Features-esque award contenders,’ referring to critically acclaimed movies like BlacKkKlansman, Boy Erased and Dallas Buyers Club,” reports The New York Post.

At its event in March, Apple brought celebrities like Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, J.J. Abrams, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and others on stage to announce their respective Apple TV+ shows and give audiences a sneak peek on what’s to come.

Talking about Apple’s upcoming streaming service, The Post writes that the company has met with its fair share of hiccups in sourcing content for the platform. While Apple gave us all a glimpse at some of its original programming coming to Apple TV+ later in the year, we haven’t heard anything from the company about the pricing and larger availability of the service and its content since March. Quoting a source, The Post writes, “They are literally anxious and clueless about what they really want to do.”
