LPDDR5 RAM announced with 50 higher data transfer compared to LPDDR4

The Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) Solid State Technology Association has announced new LPDDR RAM standard in the form of LPDDR5. The new RAM standard is much faster and more efficient that LPDDR4 RAM found on current smartphones, tablets and other computing devices. It promises an I/O rate which is 50% higher that its predecessor -  6400 MT/s, up from 3,200 MT/s found on LPDDR4. To make the doubling of memory throughout possible in LPDDR5, the architecture was redesigned by moving to 16Banks programmable architecture and multi-clocking architecture. For the sake of power efficiency, LPDDR5 comes with two new features - Data-Copy and Write-X. The press release notes that Data-Copy tells the LPDDR5 device to copy data transmitted on a single I/O pin to the other I/O pins, thereby removing the need to transmit data to other pins. Write-X, on the other hand, commands the device to write all-ones or all-zeros to a specific address, eliminating the need to send data from the SoC to the LPDDR5 device. This reduced data transmission thanks to the two new commands will help reduce overall system power consumption. Specifically for automotive tasks, LPDDR5 brings the support of Link Error Correcting Code (ECC) on the interface between the SoC and DRAM.
