Samsung Exynos 7-series 7904 announced for mid-range phones touting triple-camera support

Key Highlights: Samsung's Exynos 7 Series 7904 is based on a 14nm manufacturing process and sports an octa-core setup.  There are two Cortex A73 cores clocked at 1.8GHz alongside six Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.6Ghz. The chipset also support triple cameras and FHD+ displays. Samsung has announced the latest Exynos 7 series processors called Exynos 7904 for mid-range devices. The chipset, according to Samsung, has been customised for Indian use cases and offers high-end capabilities in affordable smartphones. We don’t yet know what specific feature in the chipset is customised for India, though. The Exynos 7904 is an octa-core SoC and is built on a 14nm manufacturing processor. The processor is equipped with two Cortex A73 cores that will run at 1.8GHz and six Cortex A53 cores at 1.6GHz. Essentially, there are two high-performance cores and six efficiency cores, to keep power consumption low. The SoC also sports an embedded LTE modem that supports Cat. 12 standards along with 3-carrier aggregration for 600 mbps downlink speeds. More interestingly, the Exynos 7904’s ISP can support a triple-camera setup, in line with Samsung’s plans of launching future-forward mid-range smartphones. The ISP on the Exynos 7904 can support a single camera sensor up to 32MP or a triple-camera setup. Samsung claims mid-range phones can come with a third sensor that can take wide-angle photos or add bokeh effects for portrait shots. The chipset also supports Full HD video recording at 120 fps or UHD at 30 fps. Furthermore, the chipset can accommodate a FHD+ display. “Samsung is committed to bringing world-class innovative technologies for the consumers. With smartphones driving the digital revolution, Indian market has great potential. The Exynos 7 Series 7904 will enable advanced mobile experiences in a broader range of devices with triple-camera support, powerful performance and connectivity,” said Rajeev Sethi, Senior Director and Head of Sales and Marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung India. While it’s not clear when the chipset will debut in India, there are strong rumours that the upcoming Galaxy M-series will be powered by the new Exynos 7904. It is currently in mass production according to the company. With the Snapdragon 675, Huawei's Kirin 710 and now the Exynos 7904, the mid-range market has more options to choose from. It remains to be seen whether the 14nm Exynos chip can take on established rivals like the Snapdragon 660.
