Samsung Display launches UHD OLED display for premium laptops

Highlights: Samsung launches 15.6-inch UHD OLED display. The company says that the panel has full HDR compatibility. The new panel features a brightness level ranging from 0.0005 to 600 nits.   Samsung Display has announced that it has launched world’s first 15.6-inch UHD OLED display for the notebook and laptop market. The display offers a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and it will go into mass production in mid-February. Aimed at the premium notebooks, the new OLED panel is claimed to offer high contrast ratio, colour accuracy, full HDR compatibility, a wide colour gamut, and “remarkable” outdoor visibility. Samsung says that the new panel features a brightness level ranging from 0.0005 to 600 nits, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 120,000:1. The company also claims that when compared with LCDs, the black colour appears 200 times darker and whites twice as bright in the new OLED panel. The display provides a spectrum of 3.4 million colours (double that of similarly sized LCD panels) meeting the DCI-P3 standard. “Our 15.6-inch UHD OLED panel provides the most suitable display solutions for carry-on IT devices with outstanding HDR enhancements, unparalleled color reproduction and much-improved outdoor visibility. We have no doubt that our new OLED display will offer a much superior visual experience to notebook users worldwide,” Jae-nam Yun, Head of the Marketing Team at Samsung Display, said in a statement. Samsung emphasises that its 15.6-inch UHD OLED panel meets the latest Display HDR True Black specification released by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association). It claims that with black colour, which is a hundred times richer than the previous HDR standard, the panel brings a significant enhancement to HDR, in depicting high-contrast almost as well as the human eye, making black imagery blacker and white images whiter. The basic difference between OLED and LCD technology is that LCD panels, wthere in phones or any other device, are illuminated by a backlight, whereas in the OLED displays, every pixel has its own light source. Reportedly, OLED panels will start coming in premium laptops from Dell  (XPS 15), Alienware (m15 and G15) in March and the HP Spectre x360 OLED 2-in-1 is slated to launch in July later this year.
