Jio becomes 3 Exabyte per month mobile network, subscriber base grows to 2801 Mn

Reliance Jio reported strong numbers for Q3 FY 2018-19 yesterday and posted a profit for the fifth straight quarter. The standalone revenue from operations stood at Rs 10,383 crore (12.4 % QoQ growth). Since its launch in 2016, Jio has seen a phenomenal rise to become the world’s largest VoLTE network. The telco claims that it experienced 2X traffic growth over the past year and maintained the lowest call drop rate in the industry at 0.12%. Further, Jio reported that it is now a 3 Exabyte per month mobile network and that its subscriber base has grown to 280.1 Mn as of Dec 31, 2018. The network added 27.9 million subscribers in the Q3 and the total wireless data traffic for the quarter was close to 864 crore GB, alongside total voice traffic of 63,406 crore minutes. The average data consumption per month per user on Jio’s network now stands at 10.8GB and average voice consumption stands at 794 minutes per user per month. Jio says video consumption on the network drives most of its usage, increasing to 460 crore hours per month. Talking about its ambitious JioGigaFiber project, the company updated that it has received “overwhelming” interest across 1400 cities. Registrations for JioGigaFiber started in August 2018 and the company says that it is now connecting homes on priority, based on requests received. Jio says that it is currently awaiting regulatory approvals for its investment in Den Networks and Hathaway, and once it gets them, it will pave the way for new offerings and services. This could mean that Jio is readying to roll out its JioGigaTV internet connected 4K UHD set-top-box, once it receives the necessary approvals.
