LG is reportedly working with Lenovo to make foldable tablet

LG Display is reportedly working with Lenovo and is tipped to be manufacturing a 13-inch foldable OLED panel for a tablet. According to a report in Korean news outlet ETNews, LG has signed a non-disclosure agreement with Lenovo and has officially started the project. Citing an industry insider, the news platform says that LG plans to supply the foldable display to Lenovo in the second half of next year. ETNews also claims that this is the first time that a company is developing a 13-inch foldable panel. Reportedly, Samsung is developing a 7.3-inch foldable panel and Huawei is working with BOE to develop an 8-inch foldable device. The report also says that LG Display is promoting a bigger-sized foldable display to Dell and LG Electronics. The development comes weeks after LG had confirmed that it is working on a foldable smartphone. LG had said that it is not gunning to be the first one to launch a foldable display smartphone but it wants to make something that consumers really need. The company has had a history with foldable displays. At CES 2017, LG had showcased an 18-inch foldable display prototype, and during this year’s CES LG Display unveiled a 65-inch UHD rollable OLED display. The South Korean company had released a flexible phone, the LG G Flex, in October 2013 with a P-OLED display. Meanwhile, Samsung could win the race to launch a foldable smartphone first. Last week, Samsung's Mobile Division, said that Samsung’s foldable smartphone will be a tablet that users can fold and keep in their pockets. He also reiterated that the foldable phone will not be a “gimmick product”, and the product will be available globally. Apple, Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi are also in the fray to launch a foldable smartphone. Huawei has already filed a patent for a foldable phone at WIPO (World Intellectual property Organization).
