Google has always known how to have some fun with its users. Be it creative Doodles, April Fool’s pranks, or matching selfies to famous paintings, the Mountain View-based company is constantly thinking up fresh ways to make its products more exciting to use for its customers. Google Search has been one such service that has, in the past, hidden entertaining surprises for creative Searchers in the form of Easter Eggs. To mark its 20th anniversary, Google shared some of its most popular Search easter eggs with us, with the story behind how they were they were conceived. Take a look and try them out. Do a barrel roll Go ahead and Google search ‘Do a Barrel Roll’ in Search and you’ll experience your world turning upside down. The Easter Egg was created by Google Engineer Mike Buchanan in just a matter of hours. When I was creating it, I thought it was just one more little Easter Egg to complement askew. I never expected it to be infinitely more popular than that previous one,” says Buchanan. Atari Breakout For the old school gamers, a search for ‘Atari Breakout’ in Google Images literally breaks out into a version of the popular arcade game Breakout, complete with signature Google colours. According to Googler Aaron Sarna, the team had just launched a new system for organising image results that allowed them to create this Easter Egg. It showed off the capabilities of the new system and was also a fun and delightful surprise for users. Zerg Rush Search for ‘Zerg Rush’ and you’ll see little Zergs eating up your search results. Your mouse is your gun and can be used to defend against the search eaters. If you don’t move fast in fighting back against the zergs, your results will start to disappear. “We came up with the prototype in just a few days for one of our demo days, where we share the latest features we’re working on with our colleagues. After showing it off, we got approval to keep working on it and eventually bring it live to the results page. We all liked Starcraft and were inspired to create something fun for users in Search,” said Googlers William Li & Onur Tekdas. I’m feeling Curious Possibly one of the most popular Google Search Easter Eggs, typing ‘I’m Feeling Curious’ in search can keep one entertained for hours with interesting trivia and facts. Google recalls, “Our team was building a framework for lightweight and delightful experiences on Search, like tic tac toe or animal sounds. We gave this challenge to a Noogler on our team to come up with an idea that could help curious users find quick facts, and this is what he came up with!” Bletchley Park If you’re familiar with the Enigma Code, you’ll get a historical surprise in Search when you type in ‘Bletchley Park’. Within the Knowledge Panel on the right side for Bletchley Park, you’ll find an homage to Turing and his team of codebreakers. According to Googler Jessa Mittleman, the Easter Egg was created around Alan Turing’s 100th birthday as a clever way to honor him. “The most interesting part of building this Easter Egg was making it work in languages that used different scripts, like Hebrew, Arabic, Cyrillic, Japanese, and Greek,” said Mittleman.
