Apple A12 could exhibit least 30 percent performance gains while using 40 percent less power

Apple debuted its A11 Bionic SoC with the iPhone X last year and the platform is still ahead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 SoC when it comes to benchmarks. The company is expected to announce three new iPhones next month and as per a CultofMac report, the company will use the A12 SoC on the upcoming handset, which is said to be faster and more energy efficient. 

This is in line with a previous report that suggests Apple’s A12 chip is being manufactured by TSMC and it’s built using the 7nm manufacturing process instead of the 10nm process used for the A11 Bionic.  Due to the compact fabrication process, the upcoming Apple processor will definitely be faster. However, the new report states that it will be 20 percent faster while taking up 40 percent less power. Additionally, the A12 is said to feature the same hexacore processor configuration as its predecessor and come with two fast cores to deliver performance when applications demand and switching to other cores for conserving energy otherwise. 

A minimum of 30 percent speed gain can be expected from the upcoming processor and going by the increments in speed Apple’s past SoCs exhibit, it could be as high as 70 percent. Additionally, the A12 is expected to tone down power consumption by as low as 40 percent.  Speaking of the upcoming iPhones, almost all reports suggest that the company might launch three new handsets in the coming months. A new report tipped that there will be an iPhone with a 6.5-inch OLED display. 

This device is being referred to as D33 internally and will apparently be the largest iPhone by far with a glass back, stainless steel edges and dual rear cameras. As per the report, on the largest iPhone variant, one will be able to view content side-by-side in apps like Mail and Calendar. 

The other iPhone, dubbed D32, with an OLED display is reported to have come with a 5.8-inch screen. The third iPhone is said to replace the iPhone 8. Codenamed N84, it should look like last year’s the iPhone X, but it includes a larger 6.1-inch LCD screen, might come in multiple colours, and sport aluminum edges instead of a stainless steel casing.
