Android P may become official on August 20

Google has already released the final developer preview for Android P and the company has been testing the new OS for the better part of the year. While Google had not given out an official roll-out date for Android P, the company said that it will be launched sometime in the third quarter of the year. Now, famous leakster Evan Blass has claimed that the time has come when the official version of Android P will be let loose on supported Pixel and Nexus devices starting August 20. Blass simply tweeted an image of a calendar for August with the date Aug 20 marked with the Android P logo. pic.twitter.com/ovby4pC3ph — Evan Blass (@evleaks) August 2, 2018 If the release date for Android P is in fact August 20, Google might soon reveal the name for the next Android OS soon.

A leak had previously revealed that Android P could be called Android Pistachio or Pistachio ice-cream, but just like every year, this could be a just one of those rumours someone made up. Android P or Android 9.0 will bring a number of changes to the Android experience, starting with support for gesture navigation. Users will be able to access the new navigation from the Gestures menu in the settings, so they will have an option to choose between this and traditional Android navigation. Android P will also bring native support for notches and Google recently detailed that the OS will be optimised for as many as two notches on a phone.

The app experience on Android P will be optimised for phones that have cutouts at the top and bottom. There’s also a new quick settings menu, adaptive brightness, predictive app actions, a new feature called Slices which will show a slice of an app in Google Search, and settings for Google’s Digital Wellbeing programme to reduce time spent on the phone. You can read all about Android P and the features coming to it here.

This time around the Android P beta was not only open to Nexus and Pixel devices, but also for the Essential Phone, Oppo R15 Pro, Nokia 7 Plus, Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Vivo X21, and OnePlus 6. It can be expected that one Android P officially rolls out to the public, these will be the first set of devices to receive the update.
