When MG Motor announced the ZS EV in India after weeks of dropping hints on social media early last month, a lot of details about the British marque's second car for the country were revealed. But that one critical piece of information that either makes or breaks a customer's car buying decision was left out of the show. Now though, we've learnt that MG Motor has set a date for the official launch of the car. On January 27, it will reveal the price of the ZS EV and talk more about deliveries. We expect the car to be priced at around Rs 22 lakh.
As you may have heard by now, the MG ZS EV is an all-electric SUV with an estimated driving range of 340 kilometres on a single charge. Competing directly with the Hyundai Kona Electric SUV that was launched last year, the ZS EV is powered by a 44.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that's IP67-rated for dust and water resistance (up to 1 metre). The electric motor connected to the battery can churn out a maximum of 143 horsepower, which means the ZS EV can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 8.5 seconds.
On the inside, the MG ZS EV comes with a number of digital features, including an inbuilt air purifier that works against PM 2.5 particles, a panoramic sunroof, and a large 8-inch colour touchscreen display for infotainment. This display also shows the user informative driving data, such as how much carbon dioxide they managed to save on their last trip. Like many new cars these days, the infotainment unit comes with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The software powering it is iSMART EV 2.0, a reworked edition of the MG Hector's iSMART system. You can read more about that here.
The MG ZS EV is entering the Indian car market at a time when other mainstream automakers are equally ready with their electric options. Tata Motors recently announced the Nexon EV, an electric version of the popular Nexon SUV. Hyundai launched the Kona Electric in July last year at a starting price of Rs 25.30 lakh. Compared to the upcoming ZS EV, the Kona Electric employs a smaller 39.2kWh battery but promises an ARAI-certified driving range of 452 kilometres on a single charge.
