Facebook is working on Dark Mode for Android app: Report

It is now a known fact that several Silicon Valley giants, including Facebook, are working on Dark Modes on their apps. In fact, Facebook has been gradually rolling out “FB5”, a fresh design to their app since F8 2019, which was held on April 30-May 1 in San Jose. The new design wears a white look but now, the social media giant is apparently working on a dark mode for the Android application.

Noted reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong spotted “this unreleased Dark Mode in Facebook’s mobile app for Android by looking into the code underneath.” She says that the mode is in “early stage of development”, noting that only the Groups tab “is looking good for the demo” at the moment.

“This Dark Mode appears to be in an early stage of development, understandably. For now, only certain parts of the app has been reworked to support the Dark Mode. For example, dark text displaying on a dark background, vice versa. With a mobile app of this scale, it could take time to refine the Dark Mode,” she said in a blog.

Facebook Messenger Android and iOS apps have already been updated, giving users a choice to choose between Dark and Light modes. The feature can be accessed from Settings. Alongside Messenger, Facebook-owned WhatsApp is also testing dark mode in beta. The company is testing the dark colour scheme on the online messaging app with the WhatsApp beta version 2.19.82. Whereas the same feature was spotted on WhatsApp beta version 2.18.100 for iOS.

Google is also working on implementing dark mode in Android Q. It is a well-known fact that using dark theme saves power on AMOLED displays and Google reiterated the same during its Android Dev Summit 2018. The company showed that, at maximum brightness, Black uses up the least amount of battery, while representing White colour draws maximum current.
