Googles new Shoelace social networking app aims to connect people over shared interests

After shutting down Google+ in April, tech giant Google is working on another social network named “Shoelace.” It is a hyperlocal network for people whose interests match and who want to find others to join them in activities like attending shows or going for sports. The social network is being developed by a small team in Google’s experimental Area 120 incubator.

It seems like we don’t have enough social networking sites with Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, and many more, do we? Nevertheless, Shoelace is aimed at growing your group of friends by matching you with people with the same interests and hobbies. It works by letting you create events or activities and invite friends and strangers to join you. Additionally, it will also notify users of the activities and events that one might be interested in.

Currently, Shoelace is operating on an invite-only basis and while Google is planning to bring Shoelace to cities nationwide, for now, they have decided to focus on New York City first. Google says, “This will help us determine what works and what doesn’t as we work to make the app available to more people.”

If you are wondering what’s up with the name “Shoelace”, Google has an answer for you - “The whole premise of Shoelace is to tie people together based on their interests -- like two laces on a shoe. We do so through activities -- which are fittingly called ‘Loops”, says Google in the FAQ section of the official Shoelace website.

The Shoelace app currently supports both Android (v8.0+) and iOS (v11.0) devices. You can download the app from Google Play if you are from the NYC area or browse the official website here.
