NASA, last year, signed a $24M contract with Lockheed Martin (An American global aerospace, defence and security company) for building a quiet supersonic aircraft.
Now a report from Techcrunch says that the jet being engineered, the X-59, will feature a big 4K screen in lieu of the front window. The aircraft is meant to go faster than sound without producing a sonic boom to make it less noisy in comparison to other jets.
This can only be achieved by engineering an aircraft as aerodynamic as possible. This shuts the possibility of having a cockpit bump often found in aircrafts. In fact, the design doesn’t even allow the pilot to be seated upfront with a big window.
NASA says The pilot of NASA’s X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology or QueSST aircraft will navigate the skies in a cockpit unlike any other. That’s because there’s no central window instead there’s a 4K monitor that displays stitched images from two cameras outside the aircraft combined with terrain data to help the pilot navigate safely.
NASA and Lockheed are making serious efforts to get this technology in action. The aircraft is still being designed and is going through various changes. Lockheed has committed to a 2021 flight date.
