Beware Twitter prank prompting users to change their birth year is locking them out of their accounts

A viral Twitter prank is resulting in users getting locked out of their accounts on the micro-blogging platform. Several tweets circulating the platform are asking users to change their birth year to 2007 in order to make their feeds look "colourful". Falling for this hoax tweet, several users went ahead and changed their birth years to 2007. This obviously did not change the way their feeds looked, but instead, locked them out of their accounts for being under age.   damn changing your birth year to 2007 makes your twitter feed all colourful we been missin out — 44 (@s_rxii) March 25, 2019   A person born in 2007 would be 12 years of age right now and this is against Twitter’s minimum age requirement policy. A person needs to be 13 and above to have an account on Twitter. Taking note of the viral prank, Twitter Support tweeted out a warning saying, “We’ve noticed a prank trying to get people to change their Twitter birthday in their profile to 2007 to unlock new color schemes. Please don’t do this. You’ll get locked out for being under 13 years old.” One of the first tweets associated with this prank has been retweeted more than 17,000 times. Several other users took the prank to the next level by editing images of their feeds and applying colour filters on them to further fool users. If you were one of the victims of this latest Twitter prank and got locked out of your account, you can file an appeal by filling out this form. A Twitter representative should get in touch with you for a resolution.
