The smartphone maker had previously teased that the handset will be officially announced on February 20, on the same day Samsung is unveiling its Galaxy S20 series of phones. However, going against its plans, the company has decided to show off everything the phone has ahead of the set date. From the front renders of the phone, we already knew that it will sport a waterdrop notch design with a 90.7 percent screen-to-body ratio. The Xiaomi Mi 9 will come equipped with Samsung’s AMOLED panel that delivers a Full HD+ resolution. It would feature 600 nit brightness and be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6. While Xiaomi has not revealed the display size, it has confirmed that the Mi 9 sports an optical in-display fingerprint sensor. The display will also feature modes like Sunlight Mode 2.0 and Reading Mode 2.0, which is said to help improve screen legibility under varying ambient lighting conditions. The smartphone will be running on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, which is manufactured using a 7nm process. Xiaomi claims that after equipping the new processor, the Mi 9 scores 387,851 on the Antutu benchmarks. This is considerably higher than the top performing Snapdragon 845 processor on Antutu’s list, which is the Mi Mix 2S with a score of 297,077. In terms of optics, the Mi 9 comes equipped with a triple-rear camera setup. It has a 48MP main Sony IMX586 sensor with 0.8 µm pixel pitch and a 1/2-inch image sensor. It supports 4-in-1 pixel binning and features 6P lens. Then, there is a 16 MP ultra wide-angle and a 12 MP telephoto lens on the back of the device. The ultra wide-angle lens has an f/2.2 aperture and 117-degree Field of View. The 12MP telephoto camera also gets a f/2.2 aperture but a pixel size of 1.0 µm. The phone’s main camera features laser autofocus with PDAF and CDAF support and the assembly gets sapphire glass protection. The company has not released information on the phone’s front camera setup. Xiaomi touts “outstanding sound quality” on the Mi 9, which is claimed to be equivalent to 0.9 cc large speaker box. Additionally, the handset will come equipped with a Game Turbo feature that will enable users to monitor CPU/GPU/FPS in real-time. It also “Predicts gaming scenes and intelligently allocates resources for complicated scenes.” There is no detailed information on how exactly the feature works. The Xiaomi Mi 9 comes in three colours of Lavender Violet, Ocean Blue, and Piano Black. A special fourth variant of the device called Xiaomi Mi 9: Battle Angel will be launched on February 24. The company's founder, Lei Jun, has revealed some details of the Transparent Edition Mi 9. It will also sport a 48MP primary rear camera, but instead of a 6P lens, it will ship with a 7P lens with f/1.47 aperture.
