LG patent describes a smartphone with 16 cameras

Smartphone manufacturers seem to be following a trend when it comes to the number of cameras on a smartphone. While Google Pixel phones impressed us with a single camera, other companies like Huawei and Samsung are piling more sensors on their smartphones in the hope of doing the same. Now, taking things to the next level, LG could be planning a phone with 16 cameras. LetsGoDigital discovered a patent, which was granted to the company by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent describes a phone with 16 lenses on the back with varying focal lengths.  While 16 cameras on a phone could be overkill, LG’s patent hints at some exciting things one might be able to pull off with them. As per the report, one might be able to shoot 16 images at once with a single tap and all the images would have different angles. This could, theoretically, allow users to capture an image from slightly different perspectives and combine them to create a moving image. There’s also mention of software-based features that might allow one to stitch different parts of an image together. With 16 lenses, the depth of field can be expected to be better and additional features like focus adjustment post-shooting can also be introduced.  Additionally, alongside the 16 cameras, LG could also equip the phone with a mirror on the back. This will supposedly help a user take high-quality photos (read selfies) using the back camera. LG could equip a phone with a single sensor on the front that captures standard photos and videos. Do note that the company has just received a patent and it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be used on its products.  Samsung recently launched its Galaxy A9 smartphone that features a four-camera setup on the back. There is a 24MP main camera with an f/1.7-aperture lens, an 8MP sensor with an f/2.4 aperture,a 120-degree ultra wide lens, a 10MP f/2.4-aperture telephoto camera with 2X optical zoom and a 5MP depth-sensing camera with an f/2.2 aperture. On the front, it comes with a 24MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The main cameras of the phone are said to use Pixel Binning technology to merge four pixels in one for capturing additional details.
