Six days after rolling out the “Your Activity” dashboard digital wellbeing feature in Instagram, Facebook has introduced the “Your Time on Facebook” tool that basically will do the same thing that the former does - help users better manage the time they on the platform. The feature will show people the time they have spent on Facebook each day, for a week. It will also give them an option to set a daily time limit on their use of Facebook, and manage the notifications that Facebook shares with them. You can access the feature by tapping the Account Settings icon (three horizontal lines) on the top right corner in Android and bottom right corner in iOS. In the list, search for “Settings & Privacy” and locate “Your Time on Facebook” sub-option. Tap this option and you will see a graphical representation of the time that you have spend on Facebook. You will see seven towers representing each day’s time spent on the platform. You can see the time individually by tapping each tower as well as know the average time which is display automatically above the graph. Below the graphs are the sub-menus with which you can edit your News Feed preferences so that you can only see the posts from friends and family. You can also choose how to interact with friends on facebook as well as set a daily reminder. Once you set a reminder, Facebook will send you a notification mentioning that you have reached the time limit that you have set for yourself. The feature was first spotted by engineer Jane Manchun Wong, and later the company confirmed the development. However, it did not mention when it will be rolled out to users. “Today we are announcing new tools to help people manage their time on Facebook and Instagram: an activity dashboard, a daily reminder and a new way to limit notifications. We developed these tools based on collaboration and inspiration from leading mental health experts and organizations, academics, our own extensive research and feedback from our community. We want the time people spend on Facebook and Instagram to be intentional, positive and inspiring,” Ameet Ranadive, Product Management Director at Instagram, and David Ginsberg, Director of Research at Facebook, had said. With the rollout of these tools in Facebook and Instagram apps, the company has joined the other tech companies like Google and Apple that have already launched “Digital Wellbeing” and “Screen Time” with Android 9.0 Pie and iOS 12, respectively. The primary reason for the launch of these tools is due to the fact that technology companies have realised how addictive and problematic their services can. Several studies have already showed how excessive social media consumption can be bad for people.
