HMD Global has been rebranding and launching its X series of devices globally for some time now. Previously, the Nokia X5 and the Nokia X6 were launched as the Nokia 5.1 Plus (review) and the Nokia 6.1 Plus (review) respectively. Following the trend, the Nokia X7 smartphone that was recently launched in China would be expected to launch as the Nokia 7.1 Plus globally. However, as per the tipster Nokia anew @nokiamobileru, the company’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas will be reserving the Nokia 7.1 Plus moniker for another device that will be announced around MWC 2019 and rebranding the Nokia X7 as the Nokia 8.1 for its global debut, which is tipped to be announced before 2019. Additionally, an HMD Global Nokia 8.1 smartphone has surfaced on Geekbench. The listing suggests that the phone is running on Android 9 Pie and is powered by the Snapdragon 710 SoC with 4GB RAM. The Nokia X7 also runs on the same processor and this sighting reaffirms the aforementioned rumour of the smartphone being rebranded as the Nokia 8.1 for its global launch. If this turns out to be true, the Nokia 8 series of smartphones, going by the hardware, will be categorised as an upper mid-range smartphone, making way for the rumoured Nokia 9 PureView smartphones that could be the company’s new flagship lineup. However, as Nokia has not announced this, we suggest you take the information with a pinch of salt.
