MediaTek Helio P70 SoC with upgraded AI capabilities, faster processing launched

MediaTek has launched its new Helio P70 chipset, which brings better AI processing with upgraded CPU and GPU for enhanced performance. It is the successor to the MediaTek Helio P60 and is said to deliver an improvement of 10 to 30 percent when performing AI-based tasks, and a 13 percent boost on general tasks over its predecessor. The new chip is manufactured on a 12nm process and comes with overclocked CPU and GPU. To handle AI tasks, the chip comes equipped with an AI Processing Unit (APU) that is clocked at 525MHz. MediaTek says that the chip can handle more complex AI applications like real-time human pose recognition and AI-based video encoding. It can figure out and enhance video call quality when on a limited bandwidth. Built on MediaTek’s NeuroPilot platform, it supports common AI frameworks, including TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe, Caffe2 and other custom third-party offerings. The CPU comes with four Arm Cortex-A73 cores that run at 2.1 GHz processors and four Arm Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. These cores are used in big.LITTLE configuration. In terms of GPU, the Helio P70 fetaures an Arm Mali-G72 MP3 that can clock speeds of up to 900 MHz. The new SoC is said to consume 35 percent less power when playing games and the company says it’s optimized to reduce frame-rate jitter and improve latency for touch controls and display visuals. In order to keep the temperature under check, it comes with Energy Aware Scheduling+ thermal management solution. The Helio P70 also features a 4G LTE modem and claims to deliver up to 300MBit/s of download speeds. It supports dual 4G VoLTE and comes with MediaTek’s smart antenna technology, which is said to automatically use the best antenna combination to sustain signal quality. With AI in its sights, the MediaTek Helio P70 supports an array of AI-based photo and video features like real-time beautification, scene detection and artificial reality (AR). It is said to have better face detection with up to 90 percent accuracy. OEMs can either use a 32MP single camera or 24+16MP dual cameras when using the new SoC on their devices. There are three ISPs that are said to help conserve power by 18 percent over previous generation Helio dual-camera setups. The Helio P70 is slated to be available in consumer devices by November this year.
